Jasper Johns & Robert Rauschenberg @ Galerie Lelong
February 1 - April 1
It was in 1950s New York that two young artists burst onto the scene, disrupting the principles of abstract expressionism that had recently emerged at the avant-garde of modernity. Jasper Johns (born in 1930) painted American flags, targets and figures using encaustic. Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) with his provocative Combine Paintings created sculpture-paintings that included items of furniture, stuffed animals and newspaper clippings from the newspaper…Both artists were fascinated by the work of Marcel Duchamp and would quickly be recognised as the initiators of a new chapter of American Art. In the 1960s, the two artists moved on to engravings and over the years produced a substantial body of work using this technique.
For this new exhibition, at the bookshop, Galerie Lelong has brought together both engravings and lithographies from Johns and Rauschenberg, from the 1970s to the 1990s.
